Daily Dose Monographic Images 1849 | Pieter Jansz. Saenredam Pieter Jansz. Saenredam, Paintings, 1600s "After being a trainee under a master in the tradition of portraiture, Pieter Jansz. Saenredam shifted his attention to the representation of grand interior spaces, probably as a result of his acquaintance to architects and mathematicians, who showed him the art and methodology of perspective. While the trend at that moment was to use this acquired knowledge as a way of constructing imaginary spaces, Saenredam opted for portraying the interiors of existing Dutch churches, in a way unifying his new interest with his own education based on creating from reality. His way of working involved numerous preliminary drawings made on site, as well as plans and elevations to understand the proportions of its architectural elements. Final paintings would come later, sometimes even years after visiting the places depicted. Most of his works portray the interior of churches, which after the Protestant Reformation were devoid of any Catholic iconography and elaborate decoration. The people who inhabit them are seen walking and talking in pairs or small groups, kids are sometimes playing on the floor. Rarely do they portray a religious act taking place, and the resulting images seem to portray the life on a public town square, only protected from weather inclemency." Via A Series Of Rooms .
